Accessibility Statement
How LowVisionGuide.org works toward WCAG 2.2 Level AA accessibility, what to expect using assistive technology here, and how to report a barrier.
Accessibility Statement
LowVisionGuide.org is committed to providing an accessible, usable and inclusive website for people with disabilities.
Accessibility is especially important to our purpose. Many visitors use screen magnification, screen readers, text-to-speech, high-contrast settings, keyboard navigation or other assistive technology to access our guides.
We treat accessibility as an ongoing responsibility rather than a one-time certification.
Our accessibility goal
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, or WCAG, version 2.2 at Level AA.
WCAG is an international accessibility standard developed by the World Wide Web Consortium. Its requirements are organized around four principles: digital content should be perceivable, operable, understandable and robust.
Our accessibility goal applies to LowVisionGuide.org and to the temporary Ghost-hosted version of the site at the-low-vision-guide.ghost.io while the permanent domain transition is completed.
This statement does not represent a claim that every page or third-party component has been independently certified as fully conformant.
Measures we take
LowVisionGuide.org incorporates accessibility into its editorial, design and review processes.
Our practices include:
- Using a logical heading structure
- Writing descriptive page titles and link text
- Avoiding instructions that depend only on color, shape or visual position
- Maintaining strong text and interface contrast
- Supporting text enlargement and browser zoom
- Using plain language and short, focused paragraphs
- Providing meaningful alternative text for informative images
- Marking decorative images appropriately when the platform allows
- Providing captions or transcripts for meaningful audio and video
- Avoiding flashing or rapidly moving content
- Designing content for keyboard and assistive-technology access
- Using semantic lists, headings and tables
- Avoiding scanned-image documents when an accessible webpage can be provided
- Reviewing important educational content for readability and accessibility before publication
- Correcting reported accessibility barriers as part of our normal maintenance process
We also periodically review our Ghost theme, navigation, forms, links and published content as the website changes.
Using this website
You should generally be able to:
- Enlarge text using browser or device settings
- Navigate headings and links using a screen reader
- Move through primary content using a keyboard
- Use browser or operating-system contrast settings
- Listen to text using compatible text-to-speech tools
- Access the primary educational content without a paid membership
- Reach guides through consistent navigation and descriptive links
Different combinations of browsers, operating systems and assistive technologies may produce different results.
For the best experience, use a current version of your browser, operating system and assistive technology.
Text enlargement and display settings
LowVisionGuide.org does not require visitors to use a particular text size, color setting or contrast mode.
You may use:
- Browser zoom
- Operating-system text enlargement
- Screen magnification
- High-contrast or inverted display modes
- Reader views
- Text-to-speech
- Full screen readers
If text becomes clipped, overlaps other content or requires unnecessary horizontal scrolling when enlarged, please report the affected page and the settings you were using.
Documents and downloads
Whenever practical, we publish information as an accessible webpage.
Some downloadable files may have been created by outside organizations or may not provide the same level of accessibility as the website. When we create original downloadable materials, we aim to include:
- Tagged reading order
- Structured headings
- Sufficient contrast
- Descriptive links
- Alternative text for meaningful images
- Accessible document titles and language settings
If you cannot access a document, contact us and request the information in another format.
Videos, audio and images
Meaningful images should include alternative text or be explained in the surrounding content.
Original videos containing spoken or meaningful visual information should include captions, transcripts or an equivalent alternative when required for understanding.
Some older or third-party media may not yet include every alternative format. Contact us if you need help accessing particular information.
Third-party content and services
LowVisionGuide.org uses the Ghost publishing platform and may link to or embed content from other organizations.
Third-party content may include:
- Videos
- Maps
- Forms
- Social-media content
- Newsletter or membership controls
- Documents hosted by another organization
- External educational resources
- Product or service websites
We cannot directly control every accessibility feature of an external website or third-party interface. However, we consider accessibility when selecting services and will try to provide an alternative when a third-party component prevents access to essential LowVisionGuide.org content.
A link to another website does not imply that its accessibility has been verified.
Known limitations
The site is still being developed and migrated to its permanent domain. During this process, possible limitations may include:
- Inconsistent behavior in third-party Ghost membership or subscription controls
- Alternative text or document-tagging gaps in older imported material
- External documents or videos that do not include complete accessibility features
- Temporary navigation or link changes during the domain transition
- Differences in theme behavior at very high magnification levels
- Changing accessibility behavior after platform or theme updates
We are reviewing these areas as content is published. Additional limitations may be identified through testing and visitor feedback.
Accessibility feedback
We welcome feedback from people who use the site with disabilities or assistive technology.
If you encounter a barrier, please tell us:
- The page address
- What you were trying to do
- What happened
- The browser and device you were using, if known
- The assistive technology or accessibility setting you were using, if relevant
- The format or solution that would help you access the information
You do not need to disclose a diagnosis or provide medical information.
Email accessibility feedback to editor@lowvisionguide.org or use our contact page.
We aim to acknowledge accessibility feedback within five business days. Resolution time will depend on the nature of the issue, but we will provide an update when an immediate correction is not possible.
Requesting an alternative format
If information on this website is not accessible to you, request an alternative format.
Depending on the material, available alternatives may include:
- Accessible HTML
- Plain text
- Large print
- An accessible electronic document
- A text transcript
- A verbal explanation
Please identify the page or resource and the format you need. We will make a reasonable effort to provide the information without unnecessary delay.
Assessment approach
LowVisionGuide.org evaluates accessibility through a combination of:
- Editorial accessibility checklists
- Automated accessibility testing
- Keyboard-only review
- Browser zoom and text-enlargement checks
- Screen-reader spot checks
- Color-contrast review
- Manual review of headings, links, forms and alternative text
- Feedback from visitors using assistive technology
Automated testing can identify some problems, but it cannot determine whether an entire website is accessible. Manual review and user feedback remain essential.
Continuous improvement
Accessibility requirements, technology and user needs change over time.
We review this statement and our accessibility practices when:
- The Ghost theme changes
- Navigation is redesigned
- A major feature or integration is added
- The permanent domain is connected
- An accessibility concern identifies a broader issue
- Accessibility standards or relevant requirements change
Material changes will be recorded by updating the review date below.
